Simple 3 Ingredients Homemade Eczema Cream Recipe with Essential Oil

There are so many creams on the market and in pharmacies that are used for eczema. Some of them do work but the steroids that are in them are not good for your body in the long run. Did you know that a build-up of chemicals and medications can also tax the liver which can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, including eczema, due to no longer being able to remove toxins as effectively?

I am not saying that you shouldn’t take your chronic medication, but rather not to use any unnecessary medicines or chemicals. Your skin is your biggest organ. It’s selectively permeable, meaning that it absorbs certain things. While water mostly runs off your skin, lotions and the chemicals in them are absorbed. This can worsen your eczema. Rather use natural lotions and creams that have all the benefits and none of the less desirable side effects.

In fact, why not make your own eczema cream? The ingredients in the recipe below are full of skin loving vitamins and minerals like vitamin E. They also have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and are very soothing and moisturizing.

Homemade Eczema Cream

Equipment:

  • Mason jar or a jar with a wide mouth and a lid.
  • Double boiler, or heat-safe jar, or a smaller pot to go into a bigger pot or a pan
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Mixer (manual or electric)

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Put some water (around 4 cm worth) in the bottom half of your double boiler, pot, or pan.
  2. Put the cocoa butter and coconut oil in the top half of your double boiler, jar, or pot and turn up the heat to melt and blend them together.
  3. Add the honey and stir it in once melted.
  4. Add in the essential oil drops.
  5. Let it cool slightly but make sure that it’s still liquid.
  6. Then use your mixer for a few minutes until it’s frothy and makes a lotion.
  7. Then transfer it to your jar.
  8. Store the lotion at room temperature to keep it soft if you live in a cold climate. If you are in a very warm climate you may need to keep it in the refrigerator.

Substitutions:

  • You can substitute the cocoa butter with shea butter or mango butter.
  • The coconut oil can be substituted with jojoba oil, olive oil, sesame oil, almond oil, or grapeseed oil. You may need to add more cocoa butter (or shea or mango butter) to help the lotion to solidify more. Palm oil can also be used and also solidifies like coconut oil.
  • Lavender essential oil can be substituted with fennel, chamomile, thyme, geranium, clove, tea tree or bergamot essential oil. These all also have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and offer more options if you don’t enjoy the smell of lavender.

Add-Ins:

  • Neem paste can also be added in though it has a very strong smell not enjoyed by everyone.
  • Aloe juice can also be added in to soothe the skin.
  • You are also welcome to use turmeric extract or add it in powder form. It has anti-inflammatory properties but it can stain your clothes.

Tips:

  • Do a patch test first to make sure that you don’t get an allergic reaction or a skin irritation to any of the ingredients.
  • Always use organic and raw oils as refined oils lose their healing properties.
  • If you can’t use honey you can leave it out.
  • If you are using the honey, try to go for manuka honey because it’s medicinal properties are ensured. If not, use raw honey. Never use processed honey. For more about the benefits honey, read here.
